Glory to the Ruler of the Universe.
To my dear brothers and sisters who are called to live a life in Christ,
It is very important to live a life by experiencing the freedom given by Christ. This freedom will not entrap us in the vagaries of this world. It will give us grace to stand firm in our faith even when we are walking in the valley of the shadow of death without snatching our gaze from our promised eternal life.
In John 8:31,32 Jesus says to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The significance of this verse is to understand that, “Truth” is the source of “Freedom.”
Now, we might think how can Truth give us freedom and set us free? We can see the response of Jesus to this in John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”. This verse is familiar to all of us but it is very important to understand the depth of this verse to live accordingly.
Through this word Jesus reveals Himself as ‘Truth’. If so, then unless we receive the freedom given by Christ (The Truth), we cannot go to our Father. And here He also reveals that the Hope of everyone who is in Christ should be the Father in Heaven and nothing else.
Dear beloved, now it is time for us to think, “are we really experiencing the freedom given by Christ?”. Is Christ the source of our freedom? We can experience a kind of freedom when we buy a new house or when we get married, or when we get a new job. All these things will make us feel that these belong to us and no one else has any power over what we have. This feeling can bring a sense of freedom in us and this sense of freedom will result in happiness.
But, if something which is meant to vanish will bring us so much happiness then dear people of God, it is definitely impossible to explain the happiness we receive through the freedom given us by Christ (The truth).
In John 17:16, Christ reveals an important secret, “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world”. Yes, we are not one among the people of this world. Even after knowing this truth we like to be blind towards this verse.
A traveller will not build a permanent house anywhere, because he knows that he is a traveller. His common sense tells him that the house he builds will be temporary and he should not waste his travelling time in building a house. He will not carry any load beyond his limit. His heart will carry the experiences he had throughout the journey and he will move on looking forward to a new experience.
In the same way when Christ who is the Truth reveals the secret that ‘we are not of the world’ our inner being should fix its gaze on the world that we belong to. Let us not involve ourselves too much in preparing for this temporary journey.
Yes my dear beloved, the freedom from Christ will set us free from this world. And it will fill us with happiness that is from above.
We read like this in Galatians chapter 5, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage”. We should not boast for receiving the freedom from Christ, rather we should depend on Christ to stand firm in that freedom which we have in Christ. If the source of our freedom is Christ then we can and we should depend on Him to stand firm in that freedom. It is Christ alone who strengthens us inspite of our weakness, because He is aware of our weakness. That is why He wants us to abide in Him.
By abiding in Christ we introduce Christ to this world. And the world will never snatch our freedom when we have the presence of the source of freedom that is Jesus Christ. And this will provide us with a new strength and knowledge which will help us to stand firm in Christ. He will lead us to be united with our Heavenly Father.
In these days let us experience the freedom given by Christ in our life, and let that freedom reflect Christ in this world. Let us decrease and let Him increase.
